upscale restaurant

The restaurant Alterbar Gastropub’s design revolved around the concept of aging. Within the parameters of this concept, the focus was on the transition from new to old, and the alteration that takes place during this transition. Aging conveys an evolution into an older version with more to tell. This is shown by changes in texture/appearance, strength, and other variables that can make it more complex. Aging is also viewed as going from more lively and social, to more private and intimate as time goes on. Materiality, as well as the division and transition of space, demonstrate this concept in Alterbar.

These 3 main materials utilized throughout the space are what characterized the concept in many areas in the restaurant.

The name, as well as the look of the logo, suggests aging of sorts with the new + patina copper.

Given the exterior of the building, the spaces were formed and divided into new/aging, translating to public/private, respectively. As the user walks through the space, they enter being newly exposed, and leave, creating a full cycle. Actions illustrate the concept.

The orange area represents the new area, the program being the bar and lounge, with more lively activities to take place (public). The blue area represents the aging area, serving as the dining area. Inhabitants here are more intimate and keep to themselves (private).

The goal was to create a design that transitioned the user into the space gently and informatively. These planks in the entry area are meant to execute this feeling.

As the occupant turns the corner, the planks twist along with the rotation of the body. The building intents to follow the users predicted actions.

With the twisted planks walking the user through the entrance, a playful mix of new and aged materials are displayed throughout the space. The materials juxtaposed throughout the space serve as a constant reminder of the contrast between the two. The actions performed between the spaces demonstrate the transition.

This area represents the direct juxtaposition and transition of materials throughout the space. Located in dining area (aging), which is why the reclaimed wood is the main material featured on the wall.
